Buzz of Electric Vehicles is the Sound of Greener Government

DES MOINES — The cost of energy continues to impact government at every level and one of the most affected areas is in the operation of utility vehicles. Throughout every working day, these vehicles are repeatedly run through cycles of starting and stopping involving relatively short distances – often while engines remain running. Such uses are inefficient and environmentally unsound but, in campus-like situations, quite common.

Recent technological advances, however, are making it possible for cities, counties and state agencies to reduce their carbon imprints without stressing their budgets. Purchasing agents from every level of government will be at the Iowa State Capitol Complex Friday, April 18, to participate in demonstrations of a full line of electric-powered vehicles.

These vehicles, manufactured by Vantage International, require no gasoline, have zero emissions and require a fraction of the maintenance ordinarily associated with traditional fleets. They are available to political subdivisions for purchase through a state contract with Vantage.

WHAT: Demonstration of electric, off-road utility vehicles designed for use in ‘campus-like’ settings such as Capitol Complex, municipalities and large, corporate-like grounds settings.

WHEN: 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008

WHERE: Parking lot # 3 (directly east of Judicial Building and just south of Court Avenue), Iowa State Capitol Complex, Des Moines. Click here for a map of the Capitol Complex parking lots.

WHO: Purchasing agents from cities, counties and state government will be receiving contract information. The public is invited.
