Lights Out in the Capitol Saturday Night

State Government to Recognize WWF's Earth Hour

DES MOINES — If you're accustomed to marveling at the beautiful lights 'washing' the state Capitol at night, don't be alarmed this Saturday when everything goes dark. It's all part of a global-wide effort to support action on climate change sponsored by the World Wildlife Federation called Earth Hour.

Across the globe, at 8:30 p.m. local time, people will be turning off their lights for one hour. Earth Hour is intended to be a symbol of a collective concern for action on climate change. In 2008 - Earth Hour's first year - an estimated 50 million people participated.

"Climate change is real, and all Iowans can take simple steps to use less energy, and as a result, reduce our carbon footprint," said Governor Culver. "I encourage citizens to visit the 'Earth Hour' website to find ways to use less energy and to be a part of what solves the climate crisis. Taking part in this worldwide event is one way for all Iowans to show their commitment to our environment."

While the exterior wash lights of the Capitol will be off, security lighting and lighting required by the FAA will remain on. All other non-essential lights will be doused.
