Time Running Out for Iowans to Give Input
The Iowa Department of Administrative Services asks Iowans to provide feedback as planners shape a vision for the future of the Capitol Complex
DES MOINES — There are just ten days left for Iowans to tell planners their vision for the future of the state’s Capitol Complex.
The Department of Administrative Services is charged with updating the Master Plan for the Capitol Complex, the buildings and grounds surrounding the State Capitol in Des Moines. The last plan was completed in 2000; this update will be completed in time to present to the 2010 session of the General Assembly. The goal for the 2010 update is to create a master plan with a world-class vision by combining sustainable design principles and recognizing the historical significance of the buildings and grounds of the 170-acre campus. Funding for recommendations from the plan will be determined by the General Assembly.
In late April an online survey was made available to all citizens to provide their feedback for the Capitol Complex 2010 Master Plan. The survey will close at midnight on Sunday, May 31, 2009. Planners will then compile and analyze the survey responses, and use the public’s input as they develop recommendations for the future of the Capitol grounds and state buildings.
Over 3,300 people have already responded, with at least one response from 98 of Iowa’s 99 counties.
“It’s really incredible, the level of interest we’ve seen from citizens as we work on this visioning process,” said Ray Walton, director of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. “We are very pleased that so many Iowans have taken the time to tell us how they want their government seat to look and function.”
